Presence is part of a user's profile in Microsoft Teams and throughout Microsoft or Office that indicates the user's current availability and status to other users. By default, anyone in your organization using Teams can see in nearly real time if other users are available online. App-configured presence states are based on user activity Available, AwayOutlook calendar states In a meetingor Teams app states In a call, Presenting.
Your current presence state changes to Away when you lock your computer or when it enters idle or sleep mode.
Teams away status duration
On mobile, your presence status changes to Away whenever the Teams app is in the background. Users receive all chat messages sent to them in Teams regardless of their presence state. If a user is offline when someone sends them a message, the chat message appears in Teams the next time the user is online. If a user is in Do not disturb, the user will still get chat messages but banner notifications aren't displayed. Users receive calls in all presence states except for Do not disturb, in which incoming calls go to voicemail.
If the recipient blocked the caller, the call won't be delivered and the caller sees the recipient's presence as Offline. People who have priority access can contact the user even when the user is in Do not disturb. Skype for Business is running in my taskbar and it shows me as Available. When i moved my mouse to the monitor showing Teams it updated to show me as Available. If anyone noticed how their latest "update" completely broke the already terrible presence indicator, please upvote the change here We need this fixed asap.

Not good. Aug I also find this approach a bit maddening I have to check in Skype for Business to see if someone is actually available or not, then go to teams to message them. This is killing our move from Slack to Teams. So, guess which platform people are using That's the first bit of communication we've reveived since "we're working on this" over 5 months ago.

User presence in Teams
It's been 5 months. Our company is a web development shop. A separate thread referenced here talks about synchronizing with Skype for Business, but that's not the issue. Even if I'm not using Skype, my status should remain Available when I'm using the computer and Teams is running.
In fact, I'm trying to move from Skype to Teams, and don't want to run both! It's been suggested that this issue was resolved, but we are still experiencing the issue in both the browser based and native windows app where if you are not actively using Microsoft Teams it very rapidly changes your setting from active to away, even if you are active on your PC.
We are piloting this application as a replacement for one of Microsoft's big competitors in this area, and the IT sponsors are going to get rather bad feedback from pilot users if this isn't resolved. We are in multiple locations a design point for Teams, I assume and cannot see who's actually Available.
Apparently this has been an issue for some time, and it's hard to believe it's not been addressed. It's still coming, not released yet. Sometimes things that seem obvious have large technical ramifications, or make sense to build in a certain sequence. I guess I am confused.
The fix for this is officially completed! Please note this was a backend fix, so no client update is needed.
This is still to come. The uservoice feature is teams using device activity to determine presence, which is apparently done, although I've not tested it thoroughly. Really frustrating. Sign In.

Green presence status, for example, indicates that a contact is Available for a conversation, whereas red presence status indicates that the contact is Busy and might not want to be interrupted.
When you use Group Chat, you might notice that chat room members appear and disappear. In addition to presence status, Group Chat also indicates a chat room's current participation status.
For example, a chat room member only appears in the chat room Participant List if the member is signed in to Group Chat, and is currently joined to the chat room that you are viewing. The presence status of a contact, and the availability of a contact in a chat room, determines how and when you start an instant messaging IM session with another person.

You can use presence status to indicate your availability to communicate to other people. You can also use presence status to determine whether another contact is available for an IM conversation.
Group Chat and other Lync Server clients, such as LyncLync Web Access, and Lync Mobile, are integrated with Lync Server so that presence status is continuously updated based on your activity, or in some cases, lack of activity. When you change your presence status in Group Chat, your presence status is immediately updated so that other users who are running Group Chat see your status change in their Group Chat. The following table describes the presence buttons and their corresponding status text.
The contact is online and can participate in conversations. This status can be set manually by the user. You see this status if the contact has assigned you to an access level other than the Team access level and the following condition exists:. You see this status for a contact if the contact has assigned you to the Team access level and the contact has manually set their presence status to Do Not Disturb.
By default, the transition from Available to Inactive occurs after 5 minutes. Then, after 15 more minutes, the status changes to Away if there is still no activity on the computer. The contact is temporarily unavailable. This contact might be available, but their computer has been idle for more that the idle time period setting — 5 minutes by default.
This contact is engaged in a meeting or is scheduled to be in a meeting as indicated in the Outlook calendarbut their computer has been inactive for the idle time period setting — 5 minutes by default.
This status is set by Group Chat. This button appears in your Contact List next to the contact name that you have blocked. The contact has manually set their status to Appear Away. Appear Offline is not available in Group Chat. Lync users might be enabled to see Appear Offline though. The contact has blocked you from seeing their presence status. Lync cannot determine the status of the contact. You can manually change your presence status to communicate your availability to other Group Chat users.
For example, if you will be away from your desk for several minutes, you can set your presence status to Be Right Back. Click the Presence button, and then click the presence status icon. Also, if a user changes their status within Skype for so will their status in Microsoft Teams be changed automatically.
Because of this federation, the Embrava busylight can now be used as a Microsoft Teams busy light for Microsoft Teams as long as the user is running both Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business.
How this works is since the Embrava Blynclight already integrates with Skype for Business, once the user changes their status in Microsoft Teams the federation automatically changes the users status on Skype for Business which in turn changes the color of the bynclight — essentially providing the user with a Microsoft Teams busy light. The Embrava Blynclight can now act a skype light and also Microsoft Teams busy light in the office which can be used to reduce interruptions in the workplace.
In addition to providing user availability in the office, this Microsoft Teams busy light can be used for incoming call and instant message notification. This ensures that any important calls to the customer is never missed. This incoming call notification on a Microsoft Teams busy light is also very helpful for the vision impaired who find it difficult to see an incoming call on their PC softphone. Another great use for this Microsoft Teams busy light is in agile workspaces. If you have deployed activity-based working, hot-desking or office hoteling within your office, this Microsoft Teams busy light can be used as an occupancy sensor that can check you in or out of a workplace.
This desk reservation method is cutting edge since the Microsoft Teams busy light can not only display user availability but also desk availability in case a user has reserved a desk.
